What will happen?

In conjunction with Open Data Day (Mar 4), the newly formed Hacks/Hackers Kuala Lumpur, with the support from Google Malaysia, is organising a one-day demo + workshop on using open data in storytelling.

In the first session, Kuek will provide an overview of data journalism and examples of data-driven stories by prominent news organisations such as New York Times, Washington Post etc..

In the second session, Michael will talk about open data environment in Malaysia and share tips to find data in Malaysia. He will also present datasets collected by Sinar Project and demonstrate how the public can access them.

In the data workshop, participants will be divided into groups to explore, analyse and visualise datasets to look for interesting findings and potential news stories. So please bring your own laptop!

The datasets we will be using:

1. Malaysian weather data from NOAA.

2. Data from Sinar Project’s PPR Kota Damansara Household Poverty Survey.

3. MACC’s Corruption Offenders Database

After the event, participants can bring the findings of the workshop back to their organisations/newsrooms for further research or reporting.

But I will be hungry during the program…

Complimentary lunch and drinks are included (thanks to Google Malaysia! Clap! Clap!).

IMPORTANT reminder: RSVP on our Meetup page is compulsory as we need to submit the participant list to Google for security clearance. RSVP closes by Mar 2 (Thursday).
